Farmer commits suicide in Davangere

DAVANGERE: A farmer at Dadapura village in Harpanahalli taluk of Davangere district reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison. The police said Sanna Ramappa (53) had borrowed Rs. 58,000 from a moneylender in Davangere and he could not repay it because he suffered loss of crops. He was reportedly pressured by the moneylender to repay the loan. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop on managing teams

Bangalore: The Union for ITES (information technology enabled services) Professionals (UNITES), in association with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), will conduct a workshop on "Leading and managing teams for dynamic people's organisations" at Hotel Ashraya International from 10.30 a.m. on Friday. INTUC (Indian National Trade Union Congress) State unit President and ILO Governing Council member N.M. Adyanthaiah will inaugurate it. Exhibition of traditional crafts

Bangalore: The Army Institute of Fashion and Design will organise an exhibition of traditional crafts and handcrafted embroidery, in association with SEWA-Trade Facilitation Centre of Gujarat, at the institute near Dooravani Nagar on Friday.

HAL pays interim dividend

Bangalore: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. has paid an interim dividend of Rs. 48.20 crores for the current financial year to the Union Government. With a turnover of Rs. 1,311 crores and a profit of Rs. 299 crores, as on September 30, 2005, the company declared an interim dividend of 40 per cent as against 30 per cent paid in the previous year, according to a release from HAL. — Special Correspondent

Winter specials on Konkan Railway route

MANGALORE: Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRC) will operate winter special trains between Dadar terminus and Ernakulam on the Konkan Railway route, according to a KRC release. Train no. 165 (Down) will leave Dadar on December 24, 27, and 31, and train no. 166 (Up) will depart from Ernakulam on December 25, 28 and January 1, 2006. Train no. 165 (Down) will leave Dadar terminus at 12.45 p.m. and reach Ernakulam the next day at 4.45 p.m. Train no. 166 (Up) will leave Ernakulam at 11.45 p.m. and reach Dadar terminus at 3.45 a.m. on the third day. — Staff Correspondent

Seminar on U.S. visas

Bangalore: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), supported by the Union Ministry of Commerce, will conduct a seminar on U.S. visas, immigration laws, dual citizenship for Indians, and laws related to business process outsourcing (BPO), at Hotel Atria on Palace Road between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on December 28. The seminar will address pending federal and State Bills in the U.S. that may affect the BPO industry in India. For details, K. Ugrappa welcomes adoption of quota Bill

BANGALORE: Congress MLC and spokesman of the Karnataka Pradesh

Congress Committee V.S. Ugrappa has welcomed the adoption of the Constitution Amendment Bill providing for reservation of seats for socially and educationally backward classes in unaided colleges. He said it demonstrates the Congress's commitment to the uplift of these classes. — Staff Reporter

BELLARY: The elections to Ittagi Taluk Panchayat constituency have been countermanded following the death of K.N. Prakashgowda, one of the candidates. Polling was scheduled on Friday. Prakashgowda, who was contesting on a Congress ticket, died of a heart attack on Tuesday night. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. have opposed the Centre's decision to allow 74 per cent foreign direct investment in the telecom sector. Members of the joint action committee of BSNL officers and staff staged a one-day symbolic dharna in Bidar on Wednesday. They urged the Government to increase public investment in BSNL. They also urged BSNL to stop outsourcing work. They have threatened to take up a nation-wide strike from January 5, if their demands are not fulfilled. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Mohan A. Limbikai, senior advocate from Hubli, has been elected member of the Karnataka State Bar Council in the elections held in Bangalore recently. Mr Limbikai is a former member of Senate and Syndicate of Karnatak University, Dharwad. — Staff Correspondent

Essay competition

HUBLI: Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Research (IIMCR), Hubli, will organise an inter-collegiate essay competition for degree students in English and Kannada, a release said. The topic for the essay competition in English is "Petty Politicians Rule Mighty Nations" and in Kannada it is "Mahiti Tantragnana mattu Jagatika Madhyama Parikalpane". The last date for submission of essays is January 10. Leopard saved

SIRSI: A three-year-old leopard fell into an open well in Kyadegesar village in Itguli Village Panchayat limits on Tuesday. The leopard was helped to come out of the well by environmentalist Shivananda Kalave and the Forest Department staff with the help of the villagers. Later, the leopard returned to the forests. — Correspondent

Voting percentage

SIRSI: Sirsi taluk recorded 71.79 per cent in the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats recently. The percentage was 71.72 in Siddapur, 69.5 in Mundgod, and 70.89 in Yellapur taluk, according to the Tahsildar's office in Sirsi. The highest voting percentage of 88.13 was recorded in Gonsur in Hulekal Zilla Panchayat constituency in Sirsi taluk. The lowest percentage of 45 was recorded in Mathigar polling booth in the same taluk. — Correspondent
