Probe ordered into `Operation Majnu'
Lucknow:
The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced a high-level probe into Tuesday's `Operation Majnu' in Meerut. The police action drew wide criticism and street protests as constables beat up couples in a park in the name of curbing `eve-teasing.'
State Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha said here on Thursday that the name of the officer who would conduct the probe would be announced on Friday. He contradicted a media report that claimed SSP (Meerut) Rajiv Ranjan Verma had been suspended. "Mr. Verma is on leave for two days to attend a marriage ceremony."
Internal inquiry
DIG (Meerut range) Raj Kumar Vishwakarma is already holding an internal inquiry into the incident. Two police officers were suspended on Wednesday for "supervisory lapses." UNI
