Railways drops satellite imaging project

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN) project, aimed at designing a Global Positioning System-based train running information system, will be abandoned.

Minister of State for Railways R. Velu told the Lok Sabha on Thursday that the Research Design and Standards Organisation took up the project in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The IIT conducted an initial survey for mapping the track latitude and longitude of the Kanpur-Allahabad and Kanpur-Lucknow sections. However, later it was decided to drop the project.

To another question, the government said the Railways was exploring the possibility of purchasing power from independent producers and trading companies, and of hiring consultants to assist it in selecting them through open tender, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said.

The Railways planned to develop a network of freight terminals for single-window service including loading/unloading, storage and road bridging at the originating and destination points. It signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Warehousing Corporation.
