THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP on Thursday sought explanation from senior party leader K. Ayyappan Pillai for comments he had made in a television interview about the understanding reached between the BJP and the UDF in elections from Beypore and Vadakara constituencies in 1991. Party State president P. S. Sreedharan Pillai said that the Beypore model was a closed chapter for the party and it was unfortunate that Mr. Ayyappan Pillai sought to rake it up. It was wrong to blame any leader regarding the stand taken at that time. The party blamed none. Mr. Ayyappan Pillai should not have given an interview on the inquiry conducted following the 1991 elections. Meanwhile, five office-bearers of the party resigned their posts in the party in protest against the move of the official leadership against secretary (organisation-south) P. P. Mukundan. Thakidi Appukuttan (convenor, industries cell), K. R. Satyachandran (district council member), B. Rajasekharan Nair (State council member) and Parassala Balachandran (district council) said that they were peeved by the vilification campaign by the State leadership against a section of party leaders. The recent suspension of 13 party functionaries was vindictive and hence could not be accepted. The suspended were all vocal critics of the official leadership, they said.
