Kannur Express extended to Mangalore

Thiruvananthapuram: The 6347/6348 Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur-Thiruvanthapuram Express will be extended to Mangalore from December 29. According to the railways, the 6347 Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur Express will leave Kannur at 9 a.m. to reach Mangalore at 12 noon. In the return direction, the 6348 Express will leave Mangalore at 2.15 p.m. to reach Kannur at 5.15 p.m. The train will later leave for Thiruvananthapruam Central at 5.20 p.m. The train will have stoppages at Valapattanam, Kannapuram, Payangadi, Payyanur, Charvattur, Nileshwar, Kanhangad, Kottikulam, Kasaragod, Kumbla, Uppala, Manjeshwar, Ullal and Netravathi. — Staff Reporter

DA for TDB staff

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Travancore Devaswom Board has sanctioned two instalments of dearness allowance (D.A.) for all employees at the rate fixed by the Government. A board release issued here on Thursday said that the establishment, contingency, temple employees and other sections are eligible for the DA at the rates revised by the Government. This incurs a financial burden of Rs.10,68,000 a month and Rs.1,28,16,000 a year, the release said. — Staff Reporter

PG medical entrance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has invited applications for admission to the postgraduate medical (degree/ diploma) courses-2006 in medical colleges in the State. The entrance examination will be held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode on February 11, 2006. The examination will consist of two papers each of two hours duration, having 150 objective-type questions each. The application forms and the prospectus can be downloaded from the official website of the CEE, `cee-kerala.org.' The last date for submitting completed applications is on January 21. Service candidates should send a copy of their application form to the controlling officer, a press note issued by the office of the CEE here, on Thursday said. — Staff Reporter

Award for Akkitham

THRISSUR: The poet Akkitham has been selected for the K.P. Narayana Pisharody Award instituted by the Cochin Devaswom Board for honouring those who make rich contributions to Malayalam language and culture. According to a release issued by the Board on Thursday, the award carries a purse of Rs.10,001, a plaque and a citation. — Staff Reporter

RYF workers to go on fast

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Revolutionary Youth Front (RYF) workers will observe a dawn-to-dusk fast at Karunagappally and Haripad on the anniversary day of the tsunami on December 26 in protest against the negligence on the part of the State Government in extending solace and relief to hundreds of tsunami victims camping at various relief camps in the affected areas, according to RYF State secretary Saleem P. Habel Foundation award announced

PATHANAMTHITTA: Aby Varikkad has been selected for this year's Pravasi Ratna Award instituted by the Habel Foundation, according to its chairman Samuel Nellikkad. The award, comprising a cheque of Rs.10,001 and a citation, will be presented to Mr. Aby at a function to be held at YMCA Hall in Thiruvalla on December 31 afternoon, Mr. Nellikkad said.

Free training for farmers

KANNUR: The Malabar Association for Nature (MAN) will organise free training programmes for farmers and set up an Indian Forest Service coaching centre. A press release by the association, formed recently at Karimabam here, said that the functioning of the environmental organisation would be formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's bio diesel expert K.T. Parthan at Karimbam on December 23. M.V. Durai, lecturer (Forestry), Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, and Karimbam K.P. Rajeevan are the president and secretary respectively of the association. — Staff Reporter

Compensation awarded

Kozhikode: Kozhikode Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has asked the National Insurance Company to pay Rs.18 lakhs as compensation to the family of a person killed in an accident seven years ago. Tribunal Judge V. Bhaskaran on Thursday ordered the insurance company to pay Rs.12.32 lakhs to the relatives of a staff of State Bank of India, C. Sundaran, who was killed in an accident at Koduvally on August 27, 1998. An interest of six per cent was also fixed on the compensation taking the total amount to Rs.18 lakhs. Sundaran was riding a motorcycle when a speeding bus hit his vehicle.
