PROUD MOMENT: K. Priyadarshan with President Abdul Kalam after winning the gold medal
Winning a medal at an international sports event is never an easy task. If there is any doubt, ask K. Priyadarshan, VII standard student of Jeevana School. He could not have asked for more when he reaped rich dividends for his perseverance and hard work. The student bagged a gold medal in boys' under-12 category at the Asian Youth Chess Championship in New Delhi. Twice he fell short of expectations at the same championship when he won a silver medal in 2003 and bronze in 2004. This time around, he was determined to claim the gold and achieved it by logging 7.5 points. He also won a gold medal in the same category at Commonwealth Chess Championship in Mumbai in 2004. By virtue of his gold medal winning performance, he has been qualified to represent the country as an official entry in the World Chess Championship to be held in Russia in 2006. He will also participate as an official entry in the next Asian Youth Chess Championship to be held in Iran in 2006.
