Now, Madurai residents can make payment of dues to Corporation at their doorsteps. They need not spend their time and energy to go all the way to the Corporation offices or tax collection centres. For, the local body, which recently introduced computerised tax collection centre-on-wheels, has proposed to send the vehicle to the taxpayers' area on request from them. The request can be made only by residents' associations. The mobile collection centre will serve residents of North Zone on Mondays, East Zone on Tuesdays, South Zone on Thursdays and West Zone on Fridays, and the market areas on Saturdays. On Wednesdays, it will go around those wards where the local body organises `Ungalaithedi Ungalukaga' special camps. "Priority will be given to those who make request (in writing to the Commissioner) on these days," the Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dinakkaren, says adding, "We will add three more vehicles in another 45 days, making it one each for the four zones". The innovative tax collection methods, such as mobile tax collection and credit card payment, have been greeted with a positive response, he adds.
