CHANDIGARH: There is a potential to generate 1,500 MW of power from agro biomass in Haryana, according to Sumita Misra, Director, Renewable Energy Department, Haryana and Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA). Inaugurating a business meet on biomass energy and co-generation (non bagasse) for thermal applications or power generation at Kurukshetra on Thursday, Mrs.Misra called upon all the stake holders to work towards generation of power from all possible renewable energy sources including biomass. She said that the increased exploitation of conventional fossil fuels such as coal, oil, petroleum and so on was affecting earth's climate. Carbon dioxide emissions might increase by 60 per cent in the next 20 years which might result in climate changes which would lead to serious environmental challenges at the global level. Haryana had made tremendous progress in development of power sector and the generation capacity had been enhanced considerably. The power scenario in the State had improved and several new records in supply and distribution had been created by the power utilities. However, it was equally important to look for other energy supply options to meet the increasing demand. She said that a massive programme for energy conservation had been launched and the Department of Renewable Energy had been designated as the nodal department for implementation of energy conservation activites in Haryana to comply with the provisions of Energy Conservation Act 2001. She called upon the entrepreneurs to come forward to set up biomass based power plants.
