NEW DELHI: Pfizer Limited India on Wednesday announced the launch of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) in the Indian market. To be made available in 30 select cities from December 26, the prescription drug is being imported from France and would be retailed at Rs. 463 for 50 mg and Rs. 594 for 100 mg. The drug comes packed in a special hologram to ensure authenticity. Pfizer will promote the drug to urologists, endocrinologists and psychiatrists. With one tablet being sold every six seconds worldwide, Viagra is one of the most successful and recognised drugs globally and is claimed to have treated more than 27 million men with erectile dysfunction. Coming to India seven years after its international launch, the drug works by augmenting the effects of nitric oxide, a key substance involved in increasing the blood flow. Speaking at the launch here on Wednesday, Executive Director of Pfizer UK, joint patent holder and part of the team that discovered the molecule, Peter Ellis, said: "It has been a very exciting journey for Pfizer and for me personally to see how the discovery of this molecule could be used in such a valuable, therapeutic way.'
