CHENNAI: Fashions in furniture can be as fickle as in apparel and some designs are lucky to last even a six-month-cycle. An assortment of what is new in imported furniture greets visitors to the Home Life Exhibition that began at Kamaraj Arangam Grounds on Thursday. "We need to always think on our feet when it comes to changing stock at regular intervals in tune with changing consumer preferences," says Syed Tariq Ahmed, an executive of the Home Life Furniture Company, which has positioned its pavilion at the mouth of the long trail of over 200 stalls participating in the show. Competitive pricing is, he believes, a strong point of Home Life, which has now diversified into office décor and outdoor furniture. Products displayed at the expo get a flat 25 per cent discount, Mr. Tariq adds. The 12-day event organised since 1998 by the Oriental Trade and Expositions Ltd, coincides with what marketing departments regard as a high spending season leading into Christmas and New Year. Almost anything you wanted for your home is available here, at discounts of 25-30 per cent. "Consumers no longer see purchases at exhibitions as pricey affairs. They now realise that the best bargains are at such events," said Syed Muneer Ahmed, managing director, Oriental Trade and Expositions. Lions Club of Marina Beach has put up a diabetes detection clinic on the premises for the benefit of the public. Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, formally opened the event. The exhibition is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
