Industry today `in a competitive era'

CHENNAI: Indian industry is no longer in a protected environment unlike a decade ago, the past chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) southern region K. K. M. Kutty has said.

He was speaking at a function to present awards to winners of regional work skills competition, skills competitions for working supervisors, 5S excellence award 2005 and QC circle convention (regional finals) here on Thursday.

Mr. Kutty said things had changed, and Indian industry was now compelled to compete in the world market. Hence it had to gear itself to meet the emerging challenges.

In his keynote address, Chairman of Amararaja Batteries Ltd. Ramachandra Naidu Galla said the country was recognised the world over for its talent in information technology. But it needed more. As India had the second highest population, next to China, manufacturing needed more emphasis as that would provide jobs and opportunities to people. In manufacturing, the skills had to be improved and quality of products ensured. Environmental management was the other key element. While villages should be manufacturing centres, the cities should be marketing and distribution centres.

John Chiramel, CEO, Intimate Fashions India Private Ltd., detailed the benefits the company achieved by implementing the 5S (sort, set, shine, standardise and sustain) concept.
