Mid-year syllabus change worries B.Com students

Staff Reporter

1.7 lakh students under Osmania University to be affected

  • Syllabus of six papers changed
  • Teachers allege they were not allowed to raise objections
  • Anomalies found in CDs, communication by HoD and Deputy Registrar

HYDERABAD: Commerce students of Osmania University are a worried lot because of the changes introduced in the B.Com syllabus for this academic year when they are preparing to take the annual examinations in a couple of months.

The decision is going to affect 1.20 lakh B.Com (regular) students in 300 colleges and 50,000 students of B.Com (computers) of more than 200 colleges spread over six districts of Telangana region. The Board of Studies (BoS) of the Department of Commerce sent the changed syllabus to the University in November and the same was sent to the colleges in December.

According to teachers, the BoS initiated the change in the syllabus of two computer papers of B.Com (regular), two papers of B.Com (computers), and one paper each of B.Com (vocational) and B.Com (computer Applications) in September this year. It adopted it on September 24 while the Standing Committee cleared it on November 15. The department then convened a meeting of affiliated colleges on November 19 and communicated to them the approved changes.

Teachers allege that they were not allowed to raise any objections and simply asked to implement the changes. They were asked to buy the CDs containing the changed syllabus. They also allege that the Head, Department of Commerce communicated the changed syllabus to the colleges on November 26 trespassing his authority while the communication should come from the Deputy Registrar (Academic) of the University to the colleges.

Apart from the decision what has shocked the teachers and students are the wide disparities between the syllabus approved by the Standing Committee, material given in the CDs, communication sent by the HoD and the Deputy Registrar. There are variations in all the four, teachers claim. For example the CD does not contain the changes brought about in accounting system of third year computers stream and central sales tax and VAT of first year vocational stream, which the Standing Committee approved. A few more anomalies are also noticed.

Several teachers from affiliated colleges are questioning the changes when the portion has almost been completed and revision is on. The teachers and students are demanding immediate withdrawal of the new syllabus.
