THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With fairs, exhibitions and cake festivals in full swing, the city seems all set to welcome Christmas and New year on a grand scale. Illuminated stars and Christmas trees are seen in every corner and the fair grounds are witnessing a huge rush. The Putharikandam maidan hosts three different fairs. The X'mas fair 2005, which is run by Supplyco, has already done Rs.2. 25 lakhs worth of business more than last year's fair, according to fair officials. There a discount of 30 to 40 per cent on the goods. The fair has stalls of Matsyafed, Milma and those of the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments. The handicrafts exhibition-cum-sales mela run by the Artisans' Welfare Association of India at the grounds, the All India Handicrafts exhibition-cum-sales mela under the aegis of the Kerala State Handicrafts Apex Co-op Society at V.J. T. Hall, and a fair conducted by a fraternity of more than 50 handloom weaving societies at the LMS Compound in Palayam, are all drawing crowds. Bakeries and cake festival organisers are competing with each other to offer cakes in various colours and shapes. English toffee, Swiss chocolate, Dutch chocolate, American blackforest, Pineapple Upside Down, Citruz and Mocha Fudye are some of the exotic varieties this time around.
