Lifer for assault
The convict had assaulted the victim when she had gone to buy peanuts from a shop near her house at Kailash Nagar in East Delhi. A seven-year-old boy, neighbour of the victim, had brought her to her house when he saw her in a distraught condition, the charge sheet said. Later, the local police arrested the man and recovered the victim's clothes and slippers from him. Forensic examination also confirmed the prosecution's charge that it was the accused Rajab Ali who had sexually assaulted the victim, the Additional Sessions Judge J.M. Malik said in his judgment.
Two held for cheating
According to the police, the accused Rakesh Goel and Mewa Ram were arrested following complaints from one Bhagwan Aggarwal, a resident of Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, and ten other victims. The duo had told Mr. Aggarwal that they could arrange for jobs to many people in organisations like the Delhi Metro, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and government hospitals. Active since 2002, the accused used to charge huge amounts of money from the victims and also give them post-dated cheques as "security". Later, they would sever all contacts and when the victims produced the cheques in the bank they invariably bounced.
Charred to death
The Fire Department received a call about the fire around 4-45 a.m. At least three fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was put out in about an hour. The firemen found a body inside the factory, which was identified as that of Vijay, a factory worker.
Auto-lifters nabbed
The accused, Sunil and Naresh, were arrested by the Anti Auto-Theft Squad while they were moving on a scooter stolen from Sarai Rohilla. During interrogation, they allegedly disclosed that their accomplices, Deepak and Shrikant, used to steal vehicles, while they would dispose them of.
Awards presented
Satyam Computers Limited was presented the first award in the newly included service industry category for 2005, while the Jaipur-unit of GAIL (India) was awarded the "Best Performing Unit" in this category. In the manufacturing companies category in the public sector, Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited was presented the award.
