Indian women in lead

NEW DELHI: The spirited Indian women opened up a one-point lead over challenger Vietnam but the Indian men disappointed following a 2-2 draw against Iran `A' in the second round of the Asian team chess championship at Isfahan, in Iran, on Thursday.

Woman Grandmasters Nisha Mohota and Swati Ghate won their matches in India's 2.5-0.5 victory over Iran `A'. In the other match, lowest rated Iran `B' pulled off a huge surprise by holding Vietnam 1.5-1.5. The results left India leading the field with four points.

With white pieces, Nisha defeated Shadi Paridar and Swati got the better of Shayesteh Ghader Pour. On the second board, Mary Ann Gomes held higher-rated fellow Woman International Master Atousa Pourkashiyan.

The results (second round): Men: Afghanistan (0.5) lost to Vietnam (7) 0-4; Iran `B' (2) lost to Turkmenistan (4) 1-3; India (5.5) drew with Iran `A' (5) 2-2.

Women: India (4) bt Iran `A' (2.5) 2.5-0.5; Vietnam (3) drew with Iran `B' (2.5) 1.5-1.5.
