VIJAYAWADA: Endowments Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy on Friday lauded the efforts of Senior Citizens Forum for creating good facilities at the home for the aged at Kanuru.

He asked the Endowment Commissioner to consider the plea of the Forum which urged the Government to reduce the lease amount for the site.

Mr. Reddy, along with Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao, Kankipadu MLA Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru), Vijayawada West MLA Nasar Vali, Mylavaram MLA Chanumolu Venkata Rao, and the Endowment Department officials, visited the home.

He went round the rooms and enquired about the health of the occupants. The Minister distributed fruits to the inmates.

Forum president Chukkapalli Kusalava submitted a memorandum to the Minister seeking reduction of the lease amount for better running of the amenities at the home.

Mr. Diwakar Reddy felicitated Lavu Raghunatha Rao, a resident of Purushottampatnam near Gannavaram, for donating Rs. 10 lakhs to the old age home.

The Senior Citizens Forum proposed to construct another block to provide accommodation to some more.

At present, over 40 people from poor background were taking shelter there.

The home for the aged came up in 2.23 acres on the outskirts of Kanur in Penamaluru mandal in 1992. Several senior citizens formed the forum and took up the responsibility of providing shelter to the old hailing from poor background.

The forum is concerned over the increasing of lease amount to Rs. 7,300 per acre per year.

The lease amount on the adjoining agricultural lands was only Rs. 3,000 per acre.

Mr. Kusalava informed the Minister that through the letter no. 60775/2003 issued on December 22, 2003, the then Endowments Commissioner recommended to the Government that the management of the home might be allowed to pay the same lease as in the case of adjacent endowment lands.
