Pension scheme for Panjab university employees

BDS among many new courses to be launched next year

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University here has been rewarded by the Central Government, for generating resources through B.Ed and M.Tech courses and reducing the whopping deficit, in the form of the much sought after pension scheme.

Vice-Chancellor K.N.Pathak told The Hindu that the University got this scheme after a 15-year struggle. "The pension scheme is a New Year's gift to the University employees and a historic event in the life of the University,'' he added.

Talking about other achievements, he said that 20 new seats had been added in the B. Ed. course and the University had started M.Tech in Nano Science and Nano-Tchnology, M.Tech (Electronic and Communication Engineering) and M.A. in Women Studies.

Prof Pathak said it was a matter of pride that the first batch of engineering students who had passed out from the University Institute of Engineering and Technology had got 100 per cent placement.

He expressed optimism that the BDS course for 100 students would be started from July 2006 as the Dental College Building was almost ready.

Also, the five-year Law Course would be started at Ludhiana as the Regional Centre Building had been completed. Also on the anvil was a five-year Integrated M.Tech in Information Technology.

Dr.Pathak said that two wings of Boys Hostel and one six storied Girls Hostel would be completed in the coming year. The problem of preserving "archives" and "researches" ---presently kept in closed boxes---would be solved as the Museum for Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology would be completed next year.

Having taken over as Vice-Chancellor on July 22, 2000, and inherited huge administrative and financial problems, Prof.Pathak is quite satisfied that the University has now somewhat come out of the woods despite the fact that the Punjab Government is still not giving 40 per cent of its share of the "actual deficit.''
