Edassery birth centenary fete begins

PONNANI: The year-long birth centenary celebrations of poet Edassery Govindan Nair began here on Friday. Social critic Sukumar Azhikode inaugurated the programme. Poet K.V. Ramakrishnan presided over the function.

Jison P. Jose, chairman of the organising committee, welcomed the gathering. Madhavan Pottekkad, convener of the committee, proposed a vote of thanks.

A cultural procession carrying Edassery's portrait was taken out through the town. A kathakali performance on Edassery's ``Poothappattu'' was also staged.

A seminar on `Edassery and the cultural march of Ponnani' will be held here on December 24. Novelist C. Radhakrishnan will preside over the seminar. M.M. Narayanan, Ponnani municipal chairman, will inaugurate the seminar. It will be followed by a poets' meet. This year's Edassery Award will be given away at a function to be held in the evening. Divakaran Vishnumangalam, who won the award for his anthology of poems titled `Jeevante Button', will accept the award from Akkitham. The Edassery Memorial Council has chalked out various programmes to be organised at various places across the State.
