NEW DELHI: An year after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a new set of initiatives to de-stress the experience of primary class students, the report card is not looking quite good for many schools. In a recent circular, the Board had observed that some schools were not following its instructions in full measure. Taking a serious note of the violation, the CBSE has now reiterated that it is "imperative for schools to follow the various initiatives taken by the Board to make learning a joyful experience'' and that "it will view seriously any violation or non-compliance of the instructions''. With a major attempt being made to ease pressure on school children by reducing the curriculum load and incorporating new and innovating ways of teaching and learning, the CBSE was hoping to bring about a change in the classroom experience of students, specially those at the primary level. Some of the major initiatives taken by the Board had included allowing Class I and II students to leave their textbooks and notebooks in the school and doing away with the pass and fail system for the two classes. While alternatives to homework were proposed for students of Class III to V, those in Classes I to V were to be evaluated on a continuous and comprehensive way. The Board had also asked for introduction of class libraries and called for a shift in emphasis on subjects like music, dance and fine-arts at the primary level to empower the emotional intelligence of students. Clarifying that adoption of the "no pass-fail" system does not exclude the conduct of examinations or evaluation, the CBSE has further said in its notification that evaluation of a student's performance is an integral aspect of curriculum implementation.
