Stone laid for biotech block on the premises of CBIT

Staff Reporter

Jawahar Knowledge Centre to be opened at the institute in March

  • Biotechnology course will have a student intake of 60
  • 356 students placed in leading companies this year

  • HYDERABAD: Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) in Gandipet is adding a new biotechnology block on the occasion of its silver jubilee.

Visiting professor from Carnegie Mellon University Raj Reddy laid the foundation stone at the institute on Friday.

Principal of CBIT Ramachandra Reddy said that 60 students would be selected for the biotechnology course, of which 30 would be from mathematics background and the remaining from science background.

    Role of knowledge centres

The block would have 11 labs, one computer lab and a seminar hall with audio-visual facilities. Mr. Raj Reddy, in his address, said that more Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKC), which would increase the computer literacy and job orientation of students, should be set up across the State.

So far, only 30 colleges, all affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, had these centres. Mr. Ramachandra Reddy, however, said that CBIT was also planning to open a JKC in March next. JKCs act as bridge between industry expectations and student aspirations.

They would minimise the recruiting company's time in training the students, said Project Coordinator of Computer Science Kalidas. Some 356 students from CBIT were placed in leading companies this year, Mr. Ramachandra Reddy said. Earlier, JKCs were limited to Information Technology, Electronics and Communications and Computer Science courses. But now, they were extended to Mechanical and Electrical Engineering course, Mr. Kalidas added. Mr. Raj Reddy said that a faculty exchange programme was under way between Carnegie Mellon University and CBIT.
