KOCHI : The Ernakulam district administration claimed to have rebuilt 238 houses that were fully damaged in the tsunami that hit the coastal belt on December 26, 2004. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said that the houses were re-built with the support of various agencies. At Edavanakad, 141 houses were constructed. The number of houses constructed in other areas: Elankunnapuzha (46), Chellanam (16), Njarakkal (9), Kuzhupalli (8), Muthakunnam (5), Puthuvype (4), Pallipuram (4), and Vadakkekara (1). Five persons lost their lives in the district. However, 21 people from the district died in Tamil Nadu. The dependents of those deceased were given financial assistance to the tune of Rs.35 lakh. Forty-three relief camps had functioned in the post-tsunami days, which housed 14,772 persons belonging to 3,283 families. The expenditure for running the relief camps was Rs.9.58 lakhs. Two anganwadis, one school, library and a public health centre were also rebuilt as part of the tsunami rehabilitation process. Free ration was provided to 40,183 families spending Rs.175 lakhs. Drinking water projects worth Rs.20.4 lakhs were launched in Vypeen. The Fisheries Department had spent Rs.82 lakhs for tsunami rehabilitation work. The District Collector said that December 26 would be observed as "Smrithi Dinam" in the district.
