Two senior officials nabbed by ACB

Bribery charge against Nellore Municipal Commissioner, panchayat official

HYDERABAD: In a major development, the sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested two senior officials of the State Government on the charge of accepting bribe.

In the first instance, the ACB sleuths led by DSP V.S.R. Chowdary trapped Nellore Municipal Commissioner S. Charles Umapathy at his official residence when he was allegedly accepting Rs. 50,000 from a contractor on Friday. The contractor, G.V.S. Surendra Babu, approached the Municipal Commissioner in connection with the Rs. 26.38-lakh payment due to him from the corporation for which the Commissioner allegedly demanded payment of 2 per cent of the amount due to him.

The ACB police, on a tip off, raided the residence of Mr. Umapathy and caught him while accepting the amount from Mr. Surendra Babu. Mr. Umapathy would be produced before the special court for ACB cases at Nellore on Saturday.

House raided

In the second case, the ACB officials raided the house of the Mahbubnagar District Panchayat Officer in the city and seized assets worth Rs. 30 lakhs. The DPO was arrested on charge of accepting Rs. 30,000 bribe from a complainant in his office at Mahbubnagar.

Gold ornaments weighing nearly a kilogram, a car, documents suggesting that he owned assets on the city outskirts in addition to those of bank lockers were found while searching his house at Anandnagar Colony, ACB Joint Director A.R. Srinivas told The Hindu. Searches continued till late in the night.

The DPO was caught while receiving the bribe for restoring the cheque power to a complainant following a High Court order. He would be produced before the Principal Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases, Hyderabad.
