TDP welcomes expulsion

Special Correspondent

"Cash-for-question scam underscored the need for far-reaching political reforms"

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has fully backed the expulsion of 11 Members of Parliament who were at the centre of a sting operation by a television channel while accepting money for tabling questions. Parliament's decision would go a long way in strengthening value-based politics, he said.

He also expressed strong opposition to the MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), which was a take off from the Assembly Constituency Development Fund (ACDF) started in Andhra Pradesh.

Welcoming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's view favouring State funding of elections, he said this would be a step forward in bringing down the influence of money in politics.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Naidu said the cash-for-question scam underscored the need for far-reaching political reforms, including looking at alternatives to the present system of Parliamentary democracy.
