THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader T. M. Jacob has urged the Government to take away the task of providing relief to tsunami victims from the State Government. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Jacob said he was raising the demand because the Oommen Chandy Government had failed to provide proper relief to the tsunami victims despite having had crores of rupees and one whole year at its disposal to reach relief to the victims. He also sought appointment of a special panel to look into the manner in which tsunami relief funds were utilised so far. The panel should have representatives of the tsunami victims besides those from political, social, cultural and social organisations and judicial officers, he added. The DIC(K) leader urged the Governor to include 10 terms of reference in the probe including the quantum of money received from various sources for tsunami relief, the accounts in which these funds were kept, the money disbursed for various purposes, the number of houses constructed for tsunami-hit and the amount spent on supplying implements to the fisherfolk.
