DMK leaders under fire at open house

Karunanidhi, Maran blamed for denial of classic status to Telugu

HYDERABAD: The denial of a classical language status to Telugu, allegedly at the behest of the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (DMK), came in for sharp criticism at an open house organised by Andhra Saraswath Parishath.

Speakers targeted DMK chief M. Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Communications Dayanidhi Maran for allegedly lobbying with the Centre to earn the status for Tamil at the expense of Telugu.

The tirade against the UPA constituent was launched in the presence of the Sports and Cultural Affairs Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, who heard the speeches attentively. The Minister promised to place the resolutions before the Cabinet at its next meeting.

C. Narayana Reddy, Jnanpeeth awardee, who chaired the session, was nominated to head a six-member sub-committee to draft the resolutions based on suggestions received on Saturday.

Procession planned

He said a procession could be taken out in the city to create awareness among public about the injustice.

Leading the criticism was the former Rajya Sabha member of Telugu Desam, Yarlagada Laxmi Prasad, who appealed to Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to take on Mr. Maran.

A.B.K. Prasad, Chairman, State Official Language Commission, said the Mysore-based Central Institute of Indian Languages intervened in an earlier order by the Centre to stretch the period of antiquity to qualify for the status and thereby denied the chance to Telugu.
