Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Saturday stood at 134.30 feet with an inflow of 379 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 69.52 feet with an inflow of 1,304 cusecs and a discharge of 42 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 8,551 mcft.

UPSC forms on sale

Applications forms for Union Public Service Commission examinations are being sold at the Tallakulam and Arasaradi post offices. The cost of an application is Rs.20.

According to a press release from the Department of Posts, Speed Post booking facility has been extended till 10 p.m. at Madurai and Tallakulam Head Post Offices, following increasing demand.

Retired officials' plea

Members of Madurai District Retired Officials Association have urged the State Government to increase the medical allowance from Rs.50 to Rs.100, Family Benefit Fund from Rs.25,000 to Rs.50,000 and medical reimbursement from Rs.50,000 to Rs.1 lakh.

Resolutions to this effect were passed at a meeting held on Sunday. The members also stressed that DA should be increased by four per cent and 50 per cent of DA merged with basic pension, as in the case of Central Government pensioners.

The association thanked the State Government for increasing the list of private hospitals from where pensioners were eligible for getting treatment. The president of the association, A. Subbiah, presided. The secretary, M. R. Athmarao, presented the annual report.

Special camps net Rs.25.98 crores

The Corporation collected Rs.25.98 crores during the special camp, "ungalaithedi ungalukaga' conducted in wards 4, 5, 28, 29, 31, 40, 55 and 56 on Wednesday.

The money was collected towards property tax, water charges, professional tax and underground drainage maintenance fee. The officials also carried out civic works in those wards.

Children's course

A short winter course on `Stimulating children's creative expressions' will be held at Valliammal Institution, Gandhi Museum, from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. from December 28. According to a release, a Canadian expert will conduct the programme. Children who are interested in drawing and painting, in the age group of 10 and 14 years, can attend the programme. Power shutdown

There will be a power shutdown in the following areas between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday due to maintenance work at the Samayanallur sub-station:

Samayanallur, Thenur, Thiruvedagam, Sholavandan, Melakkal, Nagari, Athalai, Paravai, Podhumbu, Alanganallur, T. Mettupatti, Oorseri, Azhagapuri and Vavidamaruthur.

Results published

The semester examination results for M.A. Tamil, M.A. Music, M.F.T. and M.A. Media Communication courses held in Nov. 2005 were published on Wednesday and Thursday. Students can access results at www.mkuniversity.org, www.webulagam.com and www.southindia.com

Those who wish to apply for revaluation can download the application form from www.mkuniversity.org/forms/html and remit the prescribed fee, along with filled in applications, on or before January 5. — Staff Reporter
