Full-fledged drive to clear drainage channels

Post-flood complaints prompt extra drive for sanitation

TIRUCHI : Seeking to make the most of the post-flood situation, the Corporation has initiated a full-fledged drive to clear clogged drainage channels in residential colonies of non-degradable garbage.

Responding to complaints from residents that polythene waste materials, plastic containers and bottles had been deposited in huge volumes along the drainage channels, following the floods, the Corporation has requisitioned the services of 200 temporary sanitary workers, and pressed two lorries into service for the exclusive purpose of cleaning drainage outlets of the non-degradable deposits. The special initiative would last for a week starting Saturday.

The main fear of the residents is that the swampy spots carrying these deposits could turn a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Presence of pigs in large numbers at such spots has become a cause for worry. Though the residents are exercising extreme caution and abiding by the guidelines of the Health Department to prevent outbreak of epidemics, there is precious little they could do to undertake major cleansing works.

To begin with, the workers spread out to a dozen flood-hit residential areas, including Edamalaipattipudur, Karumandapam, Kumaran Nagar, Periyar Nagar, and Woraiyur to dig out the non-degradable deposits and transfer them to the dumping yards.

The Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, and the Commissioner, Harmandar Singh, supervised the work at Kumaran Nagar, South Ramalinga Nagar and Fathima Nagar.

At Srirangam, they advised officials to modify the blueprint for the proposed market so that there will be unhindered flow in the stormwater drainages.
