Unique attempt

Lokadharmi's `Stage and Screen' programme is completing one year. The programme, aimed to provide stage experience for even the junior members of the theatre group, was conceptualised in January. The programme held in December was the 12th one.

The event has managed to provide valuable stage experience for the group members, though not all its productions were noteworthy.

Experience

It is the first time that any theatre group in the city has got together to stage works directed by all its members. The theatre group provides stage experience for even the junior-most members, teaches them to produce works with a low budget and woos the audience. The guideline issued to the members by Chandradasan, the group's director, is to limit the production costs within Rs.500.

During the past year, the group presented a wide range of works, including adaptations of short stories, scripts written by team members and full-fledged scripts of short plays. Even a satirical essay by Sanjayan, the classical satirist of Malayalam literature who belonged to the early 20th century, was adapted for stage production. Each session had a chief guest, who shared his/her experiences in their respective fields with the artistes and audience.

The 12th programme of theatre production featured Russian playwright Anton Chekhov's `The Marriage Proposal.' The play, directed by V.R. Selvaraj, was based on a Malayalam translation of the work by noted poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai. The cast included Pradeep Chittoor, Ajikumar Thiruvankulam and Namitha Nambiar. The set was designed by Sumesh Chittooran and the lights by Gireesh Menon.
