This Day That Age
The Union Finance Minister, Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, said in Madras on December 24 that financial assistance adequate to the needs and occasions would be forthcoming from the State for all worthwhile projects calculated to promote the cause of Indian music. Those dedicated to that cause need no longer fear neglect on the part of the State. Mr. Deshmukh, who was inaugurating the 29th Conference of the Madras Music Academy, said it was his view that music should find a more important place in the syllabus of study right from the basic school stage. "It is only when music becomes part of the consciousness of the people that it will fulfil its purpose of sublimating the feelings and emotions and will, in turn, draw vital inspiration from the collective life of the nation." Paying a compliment to the South as the abiding bastion of India's culture amidst the vicissitudes of history and medley of passing passions and tastes, Mr. Deshmukh appreciated the valuable work done by the Academy in arranging such annual conferences, where one might pause and take stock of the situation. The Conference, which was held in a special pandal put up on the grounds of the Academy, was attended by a large number of vidwans, music lovers, officials and non-officials. On arrival, Mr. Deshmukh was received by Mr. K.V. Krishnaswami Aiyar, President of the Academy, and other office-bearers. After prayer by students of the Academy's Teachers' College of Music, Mr. K. Soundararajan, Secretary of the Academy, read messages wishing the Conference success. Sangita Kalanidhi T.V. Subba Rao then presented to Mr. Deshmukh a welcome address with a silver frame having the figures of the musical trinity and other great musicians embossed on it. Earlier, Vidwan Marungapuri Gopalakrishna Aiyar was proposed for the presidentship of the Conference by Sangita Kalanidhi Palladam Sanjivi Rao.
