Sugar workers' plight

Vizianagaram district is so backward that even the people's representatives there seem to be docile and inactive, resulting in the public being unable to utilise the benefits of the various welfare measures being implemented by the Government.

The post of Inspector of Factories is lying vacant for the last six years. A poor workman engaged on wages of Rs. 1,200 per month in the core section at the NCS Sugars Ltd., in Bobbili met with an accident while on duty and sustained 40 per cent burns about two years ago. Neither the incident was reported to the police nor the matter brought to the notice of the Inspector of Factories. The poor worker is hardly 25 years old and he is going from pillar to post seeking justice. In this particular case, there is a clear violation of the provisions of Factories Act, payment under workman's compensation Act, etc., but none of the officers attempted to take action against the employer due to reasons best known to them.

Prevent misuse of Government land

There is a vast stretch of open land on the eastern side of the Governor's bungalow on Daspalla hills. Now a wider road is being laid in place of the existing one.

There are reports in the media that many people's representatives have written to the Chief Minister and the District Collector to allot them 1,000 sq. yards each in the area which costs Rs. 3 crores, for their residential purposes.

During the early 1960s, the then Chief Minister Neelam Sanjeva Reddy, on one of his visits categorically instructed the public works officials not allow any construction on the hill in front of the Circuit House on security grounds and also because such a step would damage the beauty of the building.

Therefore, it is highly undesirable to allow any private structures in front of the Circuit House and make Daspalla hills a concrete jungle.

The area may be converted to provide lung space by developing a park there.

Preserve cultural heritage

Attili in West Godavari district was adjudged best gram panchayat at the national-level sometime ago. The Siddanna temple in Attili is an ancient shrine for Lord Shiva said to be built by Bhoomanchi Reddies.

It is a pity that the writings engraved on the pillar near the sanctum sanctorum in the temple are now covered by granite. The seven idols of Saptarishis were also removed, all this done in the name of restoration of the temple.

Modern working practices and modifying building patterns in temples are threatening the priceless antiquity. This is an example to prove that Indians give little importance to history, heritage and culture. Both the Archaeology and Endowment Departments should intervene and take measures to preserve the cultural heritage.

Clearing traffic hurdles

Passing through the Aseelmetta Junction has become very difficult, of late, and pedestrians do not seem to care the way they walk across when vehicles get a green signal.

I suggest construction of a walkway for the pedestrians similar to the one at the railway station for crossing over from one platform to another.

Also, a flyover may be constructed to facilitate traffic flow at the busy junction. The immediate need is the walkway, which could remain even after the construction of the flyover is complete.
