CITU supports revenue staff

HYDERABAD: The CITU State committee has extended its support to the agitation planned by revenue employees in protest against the `indifferent' attitude of the Government towards their demands.

S. Veeraiah, general secretary, in a statement on Sunday sought the Government's intervention to avert indefinite strike proposed by the employees from February 7.

He criticised the Congress for going back on its pre-election promise of solving the problems of the revenue staff. - Special Correspondent

`Chalo Hyderabad' rally postponed

HYDERABAD : The `chalo Hyderabad' rally planned by the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Joint Action Committee on January 5 has been postponed to February 3 in view of elections to the State-level water users' associations on January 5, 6 and 7.

The rally is being organised to press the demands of the panchayats for transfer of powers and funds according to the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments. - Special Correspondent

Minister's assurance on scholarship grant

HYDERABAD : Rural Development Minister D. Srinivas has said that he will discuss with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy the demands of backward classes for allocating an additional Rs. 180 crores for meeting the expenditure on scholarships.

He gave the assurance on Saturday after holding talks with representatives of the Andhra Pradesh BC Welfare Association at Secretariat, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Help sought for tomato farmers

HYDERABAD : The CPI State Council has demanded steps by the Government to protect tomato farmers from traders in the context of falling prices. It wants the Marketing Department to purchase at Rs.5 a kg and sell the commodity.

In a letter written to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday, the party secretary K. Narayana said it was the Government's responsibility to come to the rescue of farmers who have already been hit hard by drought. - Special Correspondent

Mala Mahanadu to continue struggle

HYDERABAD : Leaders of Mala Mahanadu have resolved to continue the struggle launched by their late leader P.V. Rao for scrapping categorisation of the Scheduled Castes.

In a statement here on Sunday, Y. Ramulu, general secretary, said Mala Mahabadu would strive to work for fulfilling the aspirations of Rao. - Special Correspondent

House panel tour

Kakinada: The Legislative Committee on Women and Child Welfare, headed by V. Sunita Lakshma Reddy, will tour East Godavari district for two days from January 3.

The panel members will inspect anganwadi centres and review the progress of various women and welfare schemes.

Worker dies in crane mishap

Kakinada : A labourer -- Alajangi Nookaraju -- was killed on board of a Chinese Ship `MV JSAFE' when a wire of a crane lifting the industrial salt from the hull, snapped bringing him under the weight of two tonnes heavy cargo on Sunday.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination. -Correspondent

Cheap liquor claims two lives

Kakinada: Two agricultural workers -- Rajamahendravarapu Satyanarayana and Kollu Seethamma, who reportedly consumed cheap liquor at their landlord's house in Cheyyeru Agraharam in Katrenikona mandal after completion of the work there on Saturday, died on the way to hospital. - Correspondent

Free retinopathy evaluation camp

Nellore : Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre, Nellore, will conduct a free retinopathy evaluation camp at Ravi Diabetes Research Centre on December 27, between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday evening, the director and chief ophthalmologist of the hospital N. Sai Murali has informed that with an estimated 57 million persons with diabetes in India by the year 2005, there is a high potential for vision loss in persons with diabetes.

CPI (M) signature campaign

Nellore: The functionaries of Communist Party of India (Marxist), who went round several areas of the town on Sunday, collected signatures from public to brief the corporation officials about the menace of mosquitoes and the deteriorating sanitation conditions. Led by Deputy Mayor Madala Venkateswarlu, they went round Pogatota, Trunk Road, Kasturidevi Nagar and other areas and met a cross section of the people.

VIPs galore at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Several VIPs on Saturday made a beeline to the sacred temple of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala. The prominent visitors include Governor of Mizoram A.R. Kohli, Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court Justice G.S. Singhvi, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice Markhandeya Kharju besides over a dozen judges of various States. The TD officials had a tough time receiving the VIPs.
