CHENNAI:
A fire destroyed temporary shelters at Kannagi Nagar for the tsunami-affected from the south Chennai coastal belt on Sunday evening.
There were no casualties as the occupants had vacated the area two months ago after the shelters were flooded by the torrential rain.
According to the police, fire could have broken out by accident . However, the tsunami-affected persons living near the shelters blamed other residents in the area for the fire.
"We had complained to the police in the morning that outsiders were taking away the casuarina poles from the scaffolding for use as firewood. Police asked them not to remove anything and now they set fire to the shelters," said Lakshmi, who had relocated to Kannagi Nagar from Ooroor Olcott Kuppam after the tsunami.
The fire, which raged for nearly two hours, was later brought under control.
