Staff Correspondent

SAFTLY ANCHORED: MV Astoria, a German passenger ship, which arrived at the New Mangalore Port on Monday, left for Kochi in the afternoon.

MANGALORE: MV Astoria, a German passenger ship with 299 passengers on board, arrived at the New Mangalore Port on Monday from Goa.

Sources in the New Mangalore Port Trust said most of the passengers, couples, are aged between 55 and 90. The ship anchored at the port at 7 a.m.

Of the passengers, 209 went for a tour of Mangalore city and Udupi. They visited the Sri Krishna Temple at Udupi, the Gokarnanatheswara Temple at Kudroli, the Manjunatheshwara Swamy Temple at Kadri, St. Aloysius Chapel and Achal cashew industries.

They celebrated Christmas on board MV Astoria. The ship left the New Mangalore Port for Kochi at 2 p.m.

This is the second cruise liner to arrive at the New Mangalore Port this year. On April 7, MV Columbs carrying passengers from European countries had arrived at the port. The ship had 200 passengers. They visited the thousand-pillar Jain basadi at Moodbidri, the Gomateshwara monolith at Karkala, and the Soan's farms at Moodbidri, besides other places in Mangalore. The passengers were aged between 65 and 95.

Sources said another cruise ship, MV Vista Mah, will arrive at the port on January 21.

In 2004 the New Mangalore Port had received eight cruise ships. Though a considerable number of passenger ships arrive at the Kochi and Goa ports, the Tourism Department in the State has to make efforts to attract the tourists to Mangalore.
