Shocking trivialisation

It was shocking to hear Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and BJP chief L.K. Advani trivialising parliamentary misconduct by attributing the act of the MPs to stupidity. Does this mean the MPs should have been careful not to leave any evidence? Such statements only point to the insensitivity to corrupt practices among our politicians.

Mr. Advani's statements with regard to the expulsion of the 11 MPs do not reflect well on him. Having served Indian democracy at different levels in his long and distinguished career, Mr. Advani should have shown more respect for the great institution of Parliament.

Ponda, Goa

Mr. Advani's observation that the 11 MPs' expulsion is "disproportionate" to the offence committed is fine. But will Mr. Advani clarify what, in his view, is proportionate punishment for such an act?

Dhirendra Sharma,
Dehra Dun

The double standards adopted by the BJP with regard to the expulsion of the 11 MPs makes one wonder whether it realises it is the main Opposition party? The Opposition's duty is to keep a watch over the performance of the Government, not just oppose whatever it does.

K.N. Ramachander,
Bangalore
