BANGALORE: The wait for the results of the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats will end on Tuesday with the counting of votes being taken up in the morning. The elections were held on December 19 and 23.

A clear picture of the political party preferred by the predominantly rural electorate will emerge by the evening.

The counting of votes cast in the elections to 1,005 zilla and 3,683 taluk panchayat seats will be taken up at 8 a.m. in the respective district and taluk headquarters. The results will have a bearing on the political future of 19,500 candidates who have been fielded by the political parties or have contested as independents. The results are likely to be known only by the evening, as electronic machines were not used in the local body elections.

Elections in seven booths in Chintamani taluk of Kolar district have been countermanded following violence leading to police firing on Sunday. The State Election Commission has ordered re-polling in all the seven booths on December 29 and counting the next day.

Counting of votes in respect of elections in Bangalore Urban district will be taken up at the Government Women's College, Malleswaram 13th Cross, and that in respect of elections in the Bangalore Rural district at the Government Arts College.

About the arrangements for counting and security measures taken by the authorities, State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde said that the results of the zilla panchayat elections were likely to be out on Tuesday, but those of taluk panchayats might get delayed. Counting of votes and announcement results was expected to be over by 9 p.m. in a majority of the districts and taluks, he added.
