It's advantage Karnataka

Principal Correspondent

Bangalore: On a day when 13 wickets fell, Karnataka held a slight edge though Maharashtra battled hard in the last session of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group A match in progress at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. At close on the second day, Maharashtra scored 78 for no loss following-on after being bundled out for 108 in its first innings while trailing Karnataka's 260.

The day started with a touch of Monday morning blues as the host lost its last three wickets for the addition of a mere five runs.

Fiery spells

However Maharashtra's plans for a good start failed as opener S. Satbhai played beside the line to Vinay Kumar's in-swinger and lost his off-stump. Vinay (five for 22) bowled incisively and his fiery spells along with left-arm spinner C. Raghavendra's (four for 37) accuracy proved too tough a barrier for the visitor.

After Satbhai's dismissal, Dheeraj Jadhav (30) and skipper H. Kanitkar played with excessive circumspection, as they feared the demons in the pitch. However both the southpaws were guilty of wasting their vigil with hasty shots. And while Raghavendra kept wheeling away his overs with good purchase, Vinay had his sunshine moment when he trapped Amit Patel immediately after castling Jadhav.

However the hat-trick remained elusive as Dhruv Mohan survived an lbw appeal.

Feeble resistance

The lower middle-order and tail offered feeble resistance and as the innings concluded, some comic relief was gifted by Akhil, who in his follow-through gathered the ball in his right hand and removed the stump with his left while attempting to run-out Burkul! The appeal was rightly turned down.

Maharashtra failed to clear the follow-on mark of 110 and promptly Karnataka skipper Somasundar asked the visitor to bat again.

Different story

However a different story unfolded as Satbhai (53 n.o.) played some delectable drives while Jadhav dropped anchor until retiring hurt with an injured right toe. Satbhai enjoyed a reprieve on 43 with Raghavendra missing out on a caught and bowled chance. Maharashtra has a deficit of 74 but with ten wickets in hand, anything is possible in this match.
