Permanent houses handed over to tsunami victims at Mandapathur

Lakhera opens footbridge across the Arasalar, plants saplings



PAYING TRIBUTES: Pondicherry Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera placing a wreath at the newly built tsunami memorial on the Karaikal beach on the tsunami anniversary day on Monday.

KARAIKAL: The handing over of 36 permanent houses at Mandapathur and dedication of a footbridge across the Arasalar at Karaikal by Pondicherry Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera marked the tsunami anniversary here on Monday.

Homage

After placing a wreath at the tsunami memorial on the Karaikal beach, Mr. Lakhera observed silence for two minutes. A large number of people and the relatives of the victims paid homage.

ONGC gesture

He inaugurated the footbridge built, at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs, with the funds provided by the ONGC.

Anil Johari, Group General Manager, Cauvery Asset, ONGC, Karaikal, Sudhir Kumar, Karaikal Collector, M. Chandrakasu, Minister for Welfare and A.V. Subramanian, Deputy Speaker, Pondicherry Assembly, and A.K. Chathurvedi, Secretary, Local Administration, took part in the function.

Mr. Lakhera handed over the first lot of 36 houses out of the 100 houses being built by Sevai, an NGO. K. Govindaraju, Director of Sevai, attended the function. Earlier, Mr. Lakhera planted saplings.

The Lt. Governor assured the affected that 3,334 permanent houses, being built in Karaikal district, would be provided to the beneficiaries as early as possible.
