KADAPA: Telugu language, whose script dated back to 1,000 years, requires recognition as an ancient language, on the lines of Tamil, Sahitya Sravanthi State convenor Thelakapalli Ravi demanded on Monday.

Modernisation of Telugu literature and recognising the language an ancient one were imperative in the golden jubilee year of Telugu as official language, he said at a press conference here. Tamil could attain its due status due to extensive research, he said.

He called for a movement to rejuvenate Telugu language and literature. A cultural renaissance was needed to counter the growing influence of globalisation, which posed newer challenges to Telugu literature, he stated.

In the wake of UNESCO's recent report that Telugu may not be the dialect of elite sections by 2015 due to growing influence of English, concerted efforts were needed to rejuvenate the language and literature, he said.

Onset of globalisation in the 1990s gave rise to insecurity and imbalances, which had its tell-tale effect on Telugu language, he said.

Kavi sammelanam

Sahithi Sravanthi, a broader literary forum, would organise `Janakavanam', a kavi sammelanam here on January 2, in which about 150 progressive writers would amply portray people's aspirations and woes, Mr. Ravi said.

The sammelanam slated at ZP Sabha Bhavan would be inaugurated by noted poet K. Siva Reddy and Jwalamuki, Rachapalem Chandrasekhara Reddy and Singamaneni Narayana would take part, he said.

The forum promoted writings with a social outlook and against globalisation, communalism and terrorism, he said. Sahithi Sravanthi would conduct a Sahityasala and it would be held at Kadapa in the next quarter.

It was also bringing out a quarterly journal Sahitya Prasthanam, he said. Its Kadapa district convener D. Syam, Anantapur convenor S. Kumaraswamy and CITU district president A. Raghunatha Reddy took part.
