Kozhikode: District Collector Rachna Shah has warned grama panchayats in Kozhikode district that the district administration would not grant permission for sand-mining from January unless they keep an estimate of the quantity of sand mined in their respective local bodies. She made known the decision of the district administration at a meeting on sand mining held at the Collectorate here on Monday. The Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) has been authorised to estimate the quantity of sand mined from riverbanks in the district. Only nine out of the32 grama panchayats where there are riverbanks have obtained the estimate from the CWRDM. As of now Velam, Cheruvannur, Thurayur, Payoli, Kodiyathoor, Karassery, Peruvayil, Olavanna and Edacheri would be permitted to mine sand in their regions from January. However, the grama panchayat chiefs at the meeting said that the police officials were not cooperating with them in preventing the illegal sand mining. They also demanded proper utilisation of the river management fund.
