CHENNAI: Vocalist Sudha Ragunathan was conferred the Naada Kovida title at the 4th annual music festival being conducted by music journal Naadhabrahmam.

Inaugurating the festival on Monday, K.S. Bakthavatsalam, chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, in his presidential speech thanked industrialist P. Obul Reddy and banker T.S. Narayanasami for their support to performing arts. He said it was necessary to conduct music festivals to encourage artists. They should be honoured with awards by rasikas.

Mr. Narayanasami, chairman and managing director of Indian Overseas Bank, conferred the title and gave away a three-sovereign gold chain and a citation to Mrs. Sudha Ragunathan.

A.L. Somayaji, additional advocate-general, released the anniversary issue of the magazine. Mr. Obul Reddy, who received the first copy of Naadhabrahmam's special souvenir, felicitated the singer and the organisation for its efforts to promote arts. The magazine had begun a healthy practice of linking theory with practice. Of late the musical environment has changed and such efforts help to preserve the art form, he said. V.V. Srivatsa, joint secretary of Music Academy, said the word `kovida' in the title referred to one who knew his profession well. The title sits well on the artiste, he said.

Mrs. Ragunathan in her response said she dedicated the title to her guru MLV who encouraged her to take up music as a career. Being a homemaker and singer is "like riding a double horse," she said and thanked her family for its support. "We need lots of patrons of art, connoisseurs of art," she said of the title bestowed on her.
