Constable dies as gun goes off

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: An armed reserve police constable, on guard duty at the residence of Justice S. Sardar Zackria Hussain, was killed when his gun went off on Monday evening.

Sundaram (28) was sitting in the visitors' room at the residence of the Judge when the incident happened.

Advocate A. Saravanan, who was standing outside the residence, said he and others rushed in after hearing a "cracker-like noise," only to find the constable dead in a sitting position.

The shot from his 303-service rifle had ripped his neck apart, he said.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, and the Joint Commissioner of Police (South), C. Sylendra Babu, visited the spot.

Foreshore Estate Police have registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances.

Police said the deceased came to the city only in October.

Before his present assignment, Sundaram was attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police battalion, Avadi.
