MADURAI: Irked over non-disbursal of flood relief despite several submissions to the officials, the residents of Maharaja Sanghu Nagar in Vandiyur here resorted to a sudden road roko agitation in front of the Collectorate here on Monday.

The residents, including a large number of women, descended upon the Collectorate and told the authorities that they had not obtained any relief thus far. Nearly 200 houses in their area were inundated by floodwater for three days in a row and as a result they were lodged in a temporary shelter.

The Revenue officials had visited the shelter at the time of crisis and were said to have assured them that all the afflicted families were eligible to obtain the relief from the Government. However, no assistance was forthcoming.

Hence, on Monday, they reiterated their plea for relief. But since they could not get a convincing reply from officials, the members rushed to the entrance of the Collectorate and squatted on the road.

The police who were present at the Collectorate rushed to the spot and tried to convince them to give up the agitation.

But unrelentingly, the residents sat on the road for sometime. They dispersed later quietly.
