Dharmapuri: The Communist Party of India (CPI) is opposed to Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector, D. Raja, CPI all India secretary told reporters here on Tuesday. Appreciated the UPA Government for bringing out the Right to Information Act and Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he appealed to the Union Government to protect Public Sector Undertakings and not to do anything in violation of the Common Minimum Programme. The WTO agreement was forcing the developing countries to open their health and higher education sectors. Health and education sectors should not be treated as trade issues and the Government should pursue an independent foreign policy without succumbing to any pressure. He said the Union Government should extend all assistance to the State to meet its flood requirements. The State should constitute a committee including representatives from all political parties to oversee flood relief. The recent stampede in Chennai could have been avoided if relief works had been streamlined and done properly Mr. Raja said.
