Aim to open new areas in the field of research

  • Workshop to discuss the recent advances made in areas of microstructure and texture
  • Eminent persons from India and US to participate in the workshop
  • Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy to inaugurate the event

VISAKHAPATNAM : The Department of Metallurgical Engineering of Andhra University will be hosting a three-day workshop to discuss the recent advances made in the areas of microstructure, texture and property relations in close packed metals from Wednesday at Hotel Grand Bay.

The local chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals and the New Delhi-based Indo-US Science and Technology Forum are associating themselves with the workshop.

According to Head of the Department of Metallurgy N.B.R. Mohan Rao, eminent persons from India and the US will take part in the workshop.

``The 25-member Indo-US team will comprise academic experts from universities in the US, Indian Institutes of Technology, research laboratories like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory and the US Naval Research Laboratory and representatives of the Industry,'' he told a press conference on Tuesday.

    Main objective

Workshop coordinator and professor of North Carolina State University K. Linga Murthy said that the main objective of this workshop was to open up new areas and inculcate the idea of collaboration between India and the US in the field of research.

"The study of microstructure and texture of close packed metals like titanium, zirconium, magnesium and aluminium alloys is a developing field. By this, we can predict a metal's properties and in the process we can tailor-make the metals by using the techniques of thermo-mechanical process for its optimum usage. In this workshop we will be discussing the recent advances made in this area,'' Prof. Murthy said.

The workshop will be inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy.
