Economic growth offers opportunities for CAs

Staff Reporter

`Scope of services that a CA can provide is increasing'

KOCHI: Meghalaya Governor M.M. Jacob has said that the growth of the economy provided more opportunities to Chartered Accountants (CAs).

Mr. Jacob was addressing the regional conference of the Southern India Chartered Accountants Students' Association (SICASA) here on Tuesday.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was playing an increasingly proactive role in international affairs and was taking the lead in enabling the CAs to come on a par with those from the developed countries.

The scope of the services that a CA could provide was increasing by way of enactments in the various statutes, he said. He said the Government had shown greater level of confidence in the value-added service provided by the CAs.

He urged the CAs to utilise their skills to support the overall development of the country. The country was poised for an economic growth of around 8 per cent.

There had been a steady jump from the 3 per cent to 5 per cent growth of the last decade. This phenomenon would throw up more opportunities at the national and international level, he said.

He also lauded the role of the CAs in activities related to the improvement of industrial relations and productivity that have a bearing on the overall development of the country.

Earlier, Sebastian Paul, MP, said the three Acts on CAs, Cost Accountants and Company Secretaries, passed by the Parliament in the last session, would be significant for the CAs.

He also urged them to imbibe a sense of honesty, integrity and courage in their professional deals.

Minister for Fisheries Dominic Presentation spoke about the vast opportunities open to the CAs.

T.N. Manoharan, vice-president, ICAI, said the CA curriculum was being amended to improve the system.

Babu Abraham Kallivayalil, chairman, SICASA, South Indian Regional Council of ICAI; V.C. James, chairman of SIRC; V.X. Jose, chairman of Ernakulam branch of SIRC; S. Venugopal, chairman, SICASA; M. Lalith Kumar, vice-chairman, SICASA; and Stanley Kunjippalu, member, SICASA, spoke.
