WELCOME GUESTS: Tibetans arrive at Amaravathi in Guntur district on Tuesday for Kalachakra. Photo: T. VIJAYA KUMAR
AMARAVATHI (GUNTUR DT): The district administration has decided to advance the deployment of staff needed for providing various services to visiting Tibetan settlers from the north following more than 10,000 people arriving here by Tuesday for Kalachakra 2006. The administration made out a detailed plan for deployment of men for conducting various activities related to providing basic amenities from water supply to sanitation and power supply to providing security at the nine sites of tented accommodation in the town.
Control rooms
The administration has constructed specialized tents as control rooms for each service department and a district-level officer has been made in-charge of it and required number of personnel have been drafted to work in three shifts to provide uninterrupted service till January 16. Initially they were supposed to be deployed from January 1, but with the arrival of large number of people and 60,000 registering with the Norbulingka for the Kalachakra proper, advance preparations were being made to make it a smooth affair. In addition to the 60,000 devotees from India and all over the world, a large number of people from local areas are likely to add to the floating population in the town, Collector G. Jayalakshmi said.
Demand for beef
Meanwhile, the police are facing a peculiar problem of buffaloes missing from the town and nearby areas, with the demand for beef shooting up with at least one butchered everyday compared to one per week on normal days. A number of complaints were received at the police station even regarding unruly behaviour of some visitors under the influence of alcohol. The Inspector General of Police Rajavant Singh and Superintendent of Police V.C. Sajjanar came here this evening to sort out the issue. The police have decided to request the district administration and the Prohibition and Excise Department to completely stall the sale of liquor till the Kalachakra event was over on January 16.
