NEW DELHI: The Coast Guard on Tuesday decorated 11 personnel, including nine for exceptional work after the tsunami havoc. Among those awarded the Tatrakshak medal for gallantry was Commandant Pradeep Kumar Malhotra. He conducted search and rescue operations from a helicopter in the sea beyond Marina Beach and Royapuram in Chennai. He took off in another copter when the one he was flying went low on fuel. In all, he rescued 14 people, besides retrieving six bodies. Galantry awards Gallantry awards were conferred on Commandants Ali Muttaher and Milind Manohar Patil and Aircrew Diver Kamal Singh for actions of a similar nature. The lone non-tsunami gallantry award winner was Commandant Rajesh Makwana for responding to a distress call on the high seas on January 30 last year. Meritorious service The Coast Guard conferred awards for meritorious service on Inspector General Surinder Pal Singh Besra, Commandants Dinesh Rajaputhran, Aloke Kumar and Atul Chandrakant Dandekar, Quarter Armourer Vijay Kumar Singh and Assistant Engineer Vetharathinam Natarajan. All except Natarajan were awarded for going beyond the call for duty in providing relief after the tsunami.
