Lakhera calls for study on high suicide rate

Special Correspondent

An anomaly given the social progress, high literacy rate: Lt. Governor

Pondicherry: The Lt Governor, M.M. Lakhera, has expressed shock over the high rate of suicide in the Union Territory despite the progress made in the implementation of welfare schemes and the high literacy rate.

Inaugurating a two-day workshop for counsellors on `Art of Counselling' organised by the Pondicherry Women's Commission under a scheme of the National Commission for Women here on Tuesday, he said that the counsellors and also other voluntary organisations could study the actual reason for the trend of suicides here. Pondicherry, he said, was apparently in the top slot in so far as occurrence of suicides was concerned.

This was a shocking scenario, which needed to be probed in depth he said.

Asserting that mere distribution of garments every year as a matter of routine alone would not enable the poor people to cross the poverty line, the Lt Governor said that there should be some permanent measures for capacity building exercises so that people would ultimately stand on their own and make progress.
