KARWAR: The Congress is likely to gain a simple majority in the Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat and has managed to achieve simple majority in six taluk panchayats in the district. The BJP, the Janata Dal (Secular) and Independents are all set to take hold of one taluk panchayat each. Of the 36 seats in the zilla panchayat, results have been declared in respect of 35 seats and the Congress has won 18 seats so far. The BJP has won four seats, the Janata Dal (S) four seats and Independent have won nine seats. Of the 11 taluk panchayats, the Congress has gained a clear majority in the Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Siddapur, Yellapur and Mundgod taluk panchayats. Independents in the Karwar Taluk Panchayat have won 10 of the 11 seats while the BJP has won seven of the 12 seats in the Bhatkal Taluk Panchayat. The Janata Dal (S) has won seven of the 11 seats in the Haliyal Taluk Panchayat. In the Sirsi Taluk Panchayat, the Congress, the BJP and Independents have won four seats each.
