Historic triumph for Indian men

NEW DELHI: Indian men made history by winning their maiden Asian Team chess title by beating Iran `B' 4-0 in the 10th and last league fixture at Isfahan, in Iran, on Tuesday.

According to information reaching here, India finished with 31.5 points for it's first gold in the championship since its inception in 1974. Iran `A' and Vietnam were engaged in a grim battle for the next spots.

In the women's section, India and Vietnam (nine points each) were in contention for the first two spots after the fifth round.

The results:

Men: 10th round: India beat Iran `B' 4-0 (K. Sasikiran bt Mehrdad Ardeshi; Abhijit Kunte bt Mohsen Sharbaf; Surya Shekhar Ganguly bt Naser Ryahi; Sandipan Chanda bt Homayoon Toufighi).

Ninth round: Vietnam lost to India 1-3 (Dao Thien Hai drew with Sasikiran; Nguyen Anh Dung lost to Ganguly; Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son drew with S. Kidmabi; Le Quang Liem lost to Chanda); Iran `B' bt Afghanistan 2.5-1.5; Turkmenistan lost to Iran `A' 0.5-3.5.

Eighth round: India beat Turkmenistan 3.5-0.5 (Sasikiran bt Amanmurad Kakageldyev; Kunte drew with Sergei Simonenko; Kidambi bt Mesgen Amanov; Chanda bt Serdar Bayramsahatov); Iran `A' lost to Vietnam 1-3; Afganistan lost to Iran `A' 0-4.

Women: Fifth round: Iran `A' lost to India 0.5-2.5 (Shadi Paridar lost to Nisha Mohota; Atousa Pourkashiyan drew with Mary Ann Gomes; Shayesteh Ghader Pour lost to Swati Ghate); Iran `B' lost to Vietnam 0-3.

Hari Krishna takes lead

P. Hari Krishna emerged as the sole leader in the Pamplona International chess tournament by defeating Frenchman Laurent Fressinet in the fourth round at Pamplona, in Spain, on Monday. The results (fourth round): P. Hari Krishna (Ind, 3) bt Laurent Fressinet (Fra, 2); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 2.5) drew with Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr, 2.5); Jan Timman (Ned, 1) drew with Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 2); Oscar De La Riva Aguado (And, 1) drew with Zviad Izoria (Geo, 2).
